ICCSA defeated Kensington
The Es had another victory off the field — winning the battle of cobbling an XI together — but another heavy loss on it. Winning the toss against ICCSA at Adelaide HS No 2, we lost four early wickets but managed to post 8-141 from our 40 overs. Brad Rumbelow (32) was in fine fettle at the top of the order, while Abraham Tomich’s unbeaten 44 was equal parts skill, determination and concentration. So we gave them something to chase, at least, and even dared to dream of winning when they were three-for early in the innings. But after that they blew us away to win in 21 overs. David Hamann, in his first game of the season, bowled with some serious wheels to take two wickets. James Iannucci took a wicket in his first over but was soon out of the attack with a hamstring injury. Walter Hamann had a ripper game — smashing 15 in the last few overs and taking 1-21 from six overs. But the bottom line is we’re 0-4 and still really struggling for numbers (thanks to all of you who have filled in or found us players). The dream of back to back flags is gone — we’ll need to fight like hell to avoid relegation.

The Es remain winless three rounds into the season after being well beaten by Unley at Unley High. It was bad from the start when the skipper called incorrectly meaning we had to field with 10 for much of our innings as we had a player arriving late (we again struggled for numbers and were close to forfeiting). Unley posted 4-228 from its 40 overs and James Iannucci — whose hooping outswing netted two wickets — was the pick of the attack. In reply we were 0-45 before the pressure of the required run rate forced a collapse and we were all out for 136 in the 38th over. Lucas Allen showed his class to make a polished 35 opening the batting. Despite the bad loss there were numerous diamonds in the rough — Ryan Sparrow took a one-handed classic off his own bowling and Andrew Rumbelow did the same — albeit on the rebound from Abraham Tomich at short cover. The day ended with a low lowlight however — club legend Rumbelow has declared his cricket days are over. Andrew is the former A Grade runs record holder and a giant of the club. I’d like to thank him for his dedication to the Es cause over many years. He’s been much, much more than a player — his tactical brain is second-to-none and I’ll greatly miss his sage advice on the field. After beating the undergrowth and scouring the bars of several local pubs, the Es somehow cobbled together an XI to play Flinders Park at home on Saturday. That we had a side was thanks to Sam Millard, Geoffrey Black and Sam Crafter, whose 12-year-old son Charlie was pressed into service as a sub fielder until Brad Rumbelow arrived after attending to a family matter. Asked to field first, we probably bled too many runs to allow Flinders Park to make 6-217. Ryan Sparrow (2-27 from nine) was the pick of the attack. Sparrow (51), Nathan Bassett (71) and Barry Steele (a quickfire 26) batted beautifully, and James Risby showed how he’s been under-rated with the willow to make an unbeaten 12, but we ended our 40 overs on 8-198. So we remain winless after two games. Numbers will remain a challenge until the end of the school term.
