Under 14 Red V Woodville
Lost First Innings All out for 196 versus 8 /259
First game of the season and batting first on a hard wicket it was good to settle the nerves with the openers (Hamish 16, Alex 19), before both falling with the score on 44.
Some very consistent line and length from Woodville forced us into some rash shot making and poor decisions. Despite most batsmen getting a start (Ishaan 13, Cormac 10), it was the level head of the captain (Max 36) that provided any significant resistance early. At 5/98 we slumped to 9 for 130 before a strong rearguard from Jack (48 n.o) and Archie (19), who together put on 66 for the last wicket to give us a defendable total . Jacks powerful run a ball innings was tempered by Archie who worked the ball around to rotate the strike before the innings closed on 196.
Week 2 we felt confident in being able to defend our total but unfortunately the Woodville batsmen had other ideas. At 1 for 126 at tea there wasn’t much to crow about but rue our missed opportunities , with 4 dropped catches and too much short bowling to provide easy runs. Despite that, all bowlers did show periods of their skills and showed what a great attack we potentially have. Ishaan( 0/24 off 8) and Jasper( 1 for 23 off 8 ) contained early and deserved wickets , but cricket is a funny game , isn’t it ! Seb ( Mr consistent) moved the ball beautifully and was unlucky also not to get a wicket. Cormac generated some serious heat off his short runup (0 for 32 off 9) and Archie (0 for 39 ) fell victim to a calculated once an over charge from the batsmen despite a high degree of accuracy into a strong headwind. Our other legspinner Shivam bowled better with each over and bamboozled all batsmen( and our wicketkeeper) to finish with 2 for 31 and had their coach, (who is also a leg spinner) drooling at the amount of revs generated on the ball. A couple of late wickets to Jack closed out their innings at 8 for 259.
Onward to the next game with lessons learnt.
