For round 2 of the 50 over competition, SACA made Adelaide #2 available for our clash with Northern Districts. The match-up on paper would be a close, hard fought competition, with both sides boasting both numerous Scorpions and U18 state representatives. On the glorious Adelaide #2 ground, it lived up to expectations and proved to be a great game.
Northern won the toss and chose to bat on a great wicket. Katelyn Pope (3/60 from 10) managed to remove their number 2 and 3 batters, both for 3 runs, and at 2/30 in the 11th over, things looked promising. However Katie Rowe then joined Northern and Scorpions captain Tegan McPharlin, and they set about putting together an 84 run partnership. A very confident LBW appeal didn’t go our way, and Tegan McPharlin certainly made the most of the let off, scoring 69. Scorpions all-rounder Tabby Saville came to the crease with her dismissal and continued the run scoring, herself posting 69 before falling to Sarah Lowe (3/27 from 10) in the 47th over, with the score on 229. Northern batted out their overs to post a score of 9/246.
A run chase of 5 an over was not out of reach with our batting line up on this ground. Openers Bridget Patterson and Eliza Doddridge started well before Bridget was out in the 7th over with the score on 37. Captain Sarah Lowe (54) then joined Eliza and runs continued to flow until Eliza (33 from 32 with 5@4 1@6) fell with the score on 61. Some middle order scores kept us in the hunt, but with the fall of Katelyn Pope’s wicket for 33, followed by Lowe’s with the score on 163, we needed some resilience from our tail. Unfortunately we were again bowled out without facing our 50 overs and fell 40 runs short of victory.
We now have a break from 50 over games and revert to the T20 format until January. With 7 players out next weekend with Scorpions and U18 representation, we hopefully have enough depth to score a well needed win.
