14 Whites v Sturt NAIL BITER!
The 14 White team were at home on Langman reserve (Hard wicket)
Winning the toss new captain Alex Smith elected to bat giving our new look top order the chance to get runs on the board. Alex Smith and Harry Burgess opened the batting and got us away to a good solid start before Harry was caught trying to push the scoring. 1/34 after 13 gave us the steady start we needed and set the tone for the day. Runs continued to come at a steady rate with the out field being slow making us work really hard for every run. We lost another wicket but then a very good partnership between Hugo Ellery and Alex smith taking the score to 3/71 after 26 overs. We were set for some fast scoring. The boys were instructed to put the foot down as we had wickets in hand. Steady runs but a few wickets including Hugo (22) Mitch Makings (15) and Alex Smith (21) bought Jasper Thomas to the wicket. A few wild swings to get going but then some very good batting taking us to 135 in the 39th. Jenil coming in late and facing 1 ball for one 6! After 40 overs 8/143 and a solid score!
Into the field
The boys had set a good amount of runs and confidence was up. Knowing the more wicket and maidens we bowled the more pressure on their batting. Josh Tamke getting us away to the start we needed bowling 4 overs 1 / 2 . Jasper Thomas from the other end also keeping the pressure up getting a wicket, after 10 overs we had them 2/20 and things seemed very much in our favour. Mitch Makings came on and bowled some good tight overs of spin but at the other end our fast boys struggled with grip, slipping on the mat regularly and causing some lose bowling. Nick Graves came on for a good spell of medium pace getting 1/10 off 5 overs and things still felt very much in hand. After 20 overs we had them 4/56. They now had their biggest (tallest) player at the wicket which had the parents on the side a little worried as if he started swinging it could get ugly. Sam Neaves now bowling was getting wickets at regular intervals and the game was really going our way however, they still had one tall big kid batting and batting reasonably well. 8/110 after 36 Sturt were in trouble, unfortunately for us Sam had run out of overs (4/20 off 8). 4 overs, 33 runs needed then, 31 needed off 3. Seven off the next over was ok as we had the field spread. Now they needed 24 off 2 overs. Ten off, leaving 14 runs off the last. Some of the cleanest hitting I’ve seen in under 14 cricket saw this one big lad kill us off getting the runs with a ball to spare. Heart break for our lads.
This game was an absolute nail biter and was played extremely well by both sides. You could argue that the umpires made a couple of mistakes that cost the game but in truth I think they were just consistent all day not giving anything out unless it was absolutely out.
Great game boys (both sides) I personally loved watching it and think that’s what makes this game so good to play!
