With players unavailable with the ACCC and WBBL, we were again undermanned as we took on Sturt at Price Memorial, in a game we needed to win.
Sturt won the toss and batted, and a steady opening stand saw them compile 117 runs before Sarah Ferris (2/43) made the crucial breakthrough in the 22nd over. The majority of our bowlers continued to struggle, however Sarah Ferris took another wicket with the score at 151, and Sarah Lowe (1/16) then removed the dangerous Dani Ransley with the addition of only 1 more run, and at 3/152 after 29 overs, things were looking a little better. Sturt managed to add a further 77 runs from the final 21 overs to post a competitive 7/229.
After not batting out our overs in our previous game, a strong batting performance was required to get the side across the line. Eliza Doddridge, fresh from her maiden century last week, opened with Rachel Church. Eliza was again looking good, but fell for 13 with the score on 27. Sarah Lowe and Amy Kaesler both added runs in partnership with Rachel, but with both out, and the score at 3/79 in the 16th over, the game was certainly in the balance. Solid batting was needed to get us the points.
Shae Daly joined Rachel at the crease, and they set about chasing down Sturt’s total. Both hit the ball beautifully to all parts of the ground, with Rachel hitting 8 boundaries and one massive 6 that had fielders and spectators taking close to 5 minutes to find the ball. Their 50 run partnership came from 10 overs, the next 100 from 17, seeing us across the line in the 43rd over. Rachel finished unbeaten on 105, scoring her first A Grade century, and Shae posting her first A Grade 50 in finishing 68no.
Rachel and Shae’s partnership of 153 is the highest in SACA 1st Grade for any wicket this season.
The win capped a great week for the club, and in particular Eliza and Rachel, with Eliza Doddridge having posted 104 against West Torrens the previous Sunday. Eliza then coached, and Rachel captained, the U18 side to victory in the inaugural SACA U18 Shield, where Rachel compiled scores of 60no and 34no, backed up by her 105no in A Grade -199no for the week!
