14 Whites v Northern Districts (HOT HOT HOT!)

The 14 White team were at home on Langman reserve (Hard wicket)

Day one and lots of rain and a very damp outfield greeted us as we took on the top of the table Northern districts. Losing the toss we were sent in to bat. Not an ideal result but run’s on the board is always a good thing! A small delay whilst we waited for the hard wicket to dry a little, a few test runs with boys slipping over and then we were away (under 14 cricket we were all keen to get the boys a game!).

Our line up this game included three boys up from the academy showcasing exactly what the academy is for! We felt as though our batting was going to be fairly strong and with smiles the boys got underway. Unfortunately we Lost Kyle second ball he faced to a cracker that skidded on and just clipped the stumps 1/1 not an ideal start. Mitch Makings and Josh Tamke settled in and put on a fantastic partnership of 59 runs before josh was unluckily bowled hitting the ball into his pad. We were off to a good start although our run rate was slow (slow outfield not helping). Archer Schwartz came and went after one ball hurting us a little but still in a reasonable position at 3/60 after 26. Oliver Cooke looked in good form hitting the ball cleanly but unfortunately edged one after a good partnership of 31. Mitch was batting well, building his score and looked like he was in for a big score however with the run rate a little low and needing to push runs after a period of dot balls he lost his fight and a very well made 54! Jim Kelly (one of our academy boys) was still at the crease and starting to find some runs. Few more cheap wickets and a smashing cameo by Jenil Patel hitting 2 massive sixes saw us make a reasonable 10/161 in the 59th over. Jim Kelly 21 not out and showing some real determination!

We thought this was a fairly reasonable score considering the conditions and early wickets on day 2 would see us in with a good chance!

Day 2.

Forecast for 36 but felt more like 65 at Langman and we knew we were in for a very hard day out in the sun. Early wickets were going to be key and energy had to be kept up for the entire game! We got our wish with Nicholas Grave getting 2 wickets in his first over! Game On! However, this brought two very good batsmen to the crease who really were never troubled by our bowling attack wilting in the sun. Game over 2/151 at tea after 30 overs and our boys cooked! A break in the shade, some zooper doopers and a slight cooling down in temp, set some new goals to bowl them out and try and restrict the score and we were away again! Hugo Ellery getting the breakthrough lifting the side then Oliver Cooke getting rid of the other lad and we finally seemed to be making progress. Jesse McMahon getting his first under 14 wicket (up from the academy!) and we had a small bit of momentum. Lots more runs to them with us finally bowling them out in the 56th over on 296 (ouch!).

Best bowlers

Nick Graves 3/29

Oliver Cooke 1/16

Not our best day of cricket but really great signs seeing the academy boys doing well!
