Round 1 under 16 Whites. Browns lose in a thriller! New captain Luke Valente won the toss and decided to bat on a warm afternoon at the Paddocks. Early wickets had the Browns in trouble at 3/34 but then Luke Valente thriving on the captaincy role and young left hander Fred McClure constructed a brilliant partnership of 81 to get us back in the game. Arham Hashmi bought in at the last moment from the under 14s looked really comfortable with 13 and I’m sure we will see more of him at this level soon. Another collapse of 5/20 had the Browns searching for a competitive total and fortunately this was achieved with some some fluent stroke play and 24 runs in the last 3 overs from Riley Slack and David Hamann. The target was 160 as a batting team and with 161 on the board we were set up to defend our total. Our bowling effort didn’t start quite as we had planned and Northern Districts had 30 on the board without a wicket before we could blink. Some bowling variation introduced by the captain soon quelled the run flow and a steady flow of wickets left them at 5/80 and we were back in the game. Fred McClure, David Hamann,Finn Hillbery and Cooper Harrod were doing a fine job. Then the real action of the match began with a slightly unorthodox big hitting left hander striding to the crease. His favourite shot was cow corner and boy did he play this shot well !! He was at the crease for 46 balls, 13 huge swing and misses to Cooper Harrod and Riley Slack but 33 connections on his way to 71. We had many opportunities to dismiss him with runout misses, dropped chances and even clean bowling him as he charged Riley Slack but for very unclear reasons the umpire then proceeded to ruin the Kensington celebration by saying it was a dead ball. Everyone else on the field seemed to be ready and aware of what was going on except for the umpire who appeared rattled by the big left hander charging down the pitch. This result was in the 3rd last over with still 10 to win, it certainly put a dampner on what was a pretty good start for the season. Cooper Harrod finished with 2/14 off 6 overs, Luke Valente capping a good game with 2/33 off 8 overs. Great late bowling from Luke, Cooper and Riley. Jed Spence took a brilliant catch at first slip, Fred McClure held a ripper in close and Arham was outstanding in the field including a runout. Solid start from the Whites, a game of missed opportunities, bring on next week !! Gary Slack Bonnetts Saddleworld
